Start your own networking events

Fortunately for everyone there are a lot of people that are looking for just a few friends to get together with, and just have some fun together.  Often though, a small circle of friends will just fizzle out, unless there is at least one person that drives this a little.  So to help you keep a circle of friends alive I would like to offer a few tips on how to achieve this, and at the same time getting the circle of friends to grow, and grow, or just renew itself constantly.

Solving some problems

1.      Who

Well the best place to always start is with your immediate friends, work colleagues etc.  Speak to them and check if they would be interested in getting together.  This will help you to get some sense of the number of people that will be there.  (Start an email mailing list, which you can expand as your group expands)

Then ask each of your friends to invite at least 1 new person along, to the get together.  When you meet this new person (probably at the get together) make sure to add them to your mailing list.

2.      Venue

This is often the hardest thing to get sorted, as few of us have enough space (or finances) to entertain ourselves, at our own homes.  (Also you do not always want a bunch of strangers just rocking up.)

Solution :

a)                  Go to your local pub, or restaurant, or coffee shop and speak to the manager, see if they would be willing to book a small group, and maybe give a little discount for the group, especially if you do regular events at this venue.  At first they may not, but if they see you do come regularly, and your group is growing, they will become more and more inclined to help you.

b)                  Of course a park (in day time) makes for a nice picnic and it is usually not to hard to set up.

c)                   Speak to your friends and get some ideas that they might have for venues.

d)                  And do not forget that often there are adult clubs nearby that you could do this with as well.

e)                  Oh, and the best part of an external venue.  Everybody pays for themselves.

3.      Theme

Though this is often overlooked, this is a very useful tool to generate interest, especially since this will set a point of common interest for the event.  You need to have some reason why people would want to attend your event.  Yes and for some just the drinking will be enough of an attraction, but if you really want to get some life into your event, there has to be some other commonality.

Eg.

-           Sport – is a topic that interests many

-                      Languages – May people around the world are interested in speaking specific languages.  Say a let’s speak English evening.

-                      Singles night – This is a topic which tends to generate a lot of buzz

-                      Holiday club – To plan and discuss holiday destinations

Just as a last point to this particular issue.  A very god reason to have a them for your event is that new people will not likely feel left out, or pushed aside, as they will likely also have some value to add.

4.      Group name or theme

Create an identity for your group. (even if just in name eg. Holiday club).  There are some main reasons for this working :

a)                  It create a sense of belonging, and thus generates a continued interest and support.

b)                  It sets the stage for specific topics of discussions.

5.      Regular

Try to make the events a regular thing. (once a week or two weeks, or even once a month)  People tend to start planning attendance when they know there is a regular thing.  Especially if it holds their interest.

6.      List and promote

·                      If the pub has a notice board, put up a notice.

·                      If you have a notice board at work.  Put up a notice

·                      Email your mailing list, and ask your friends to forward the invitation to their friends.

·                      List your event on events calendars like the Free Adult Events Calendar or other community sites.

·                      If possible set up a small website which makes it possible for you to promote your event, so all your members can just go have a look, and also so they can refer their friends to your site. (it is a non aggressive way of introducing new people into the group)

And remember to ask them to RSVP so you can maybe book, and get a better discount…

7.      What does this have to do with adult dating.

Directly, probably very little.  However you are likely to find that eventually, and usually without any significant nudging from you, this could easily turn into a dating night.  (of course you have to make sure you pick your themes right otherwise, you end up with a bunch of prudes.)  It does however pay to pick a theme other than sex, which makes networking easy and less pressured.

And if this all seems like too much trouble, then just attend someone else’s event, and refer them to FAEC so they can list their event with us, and make it even better for everybody.
